The situation

What has happened

Two loads of Messmate salvage log from coupe GP-09C Burnt Creek arrived yesterday afternoon and were unloaded into bay 9 without being measured or marked because the grader had finished for the day. The batch is recorded in the Log Yard and Stock Register as LB-26-0917, status Received, 27.5 cubic metres by docket. The band mill wants to start on appearance grade hardwood at 10:00 am and the Sawmill Manager needs to know how much of the batch is band mill quality. The logs show fire scarring on the bark, some end splits and, on one log, a fencing staple visible near the butt. Bay 9 is a certified bay and both loads carry certified dockets from a Timberline coupe.

Your brief. Measure, tally, grade, colour code and segregate the LB-26-0917 batch in line with the log yard procedure, update the register, quarantine any log with metal or contamination, and report the tally and grade split to the Sawmill Manager.

What to look for

Evidence guide

Check that grades and colour codes match the procedure and that the reasoning for each grade is recorded. The quarantined log must be a separate register line and must not be in a certified production bay. The volume calculation must be shown, and the 3 percent rule applied correctly. Look for evidence the student kept certified and non-certified logs separate and can explain why.
