Coupe
A defined area of forest planned and harvested as a single operation under one harvest plan.
Streamside buffer
A strip of vegetation retained alongside a watercourse where machines are excluded to protect water quality.
Landing
A cleared area in a coupe where logs are stockpiled, processed and loaded onto trucks.
Snig track
A temporary track used to drag or carry felled trees from the stump to the landing.
Chain of custody
The documented path certified wood follows from forest to customer that supports a certified claim on an invoice.
Visual stress grading
Grading structural timber by inspecting its knots, slope of grain, wane and other features against the rules in the Australian Standard.
Kiln charge
One load of stacked timber dried together in a kiln under a single drying schedule.
Recovery
The proportion of a log's volume that becomes saleable sawn timber.
Sawing deviation
The variation in thickness along a sawn board caused by the blade wandering from a straight cut.
Silviculture
The practice of establishing, growing and tending forests to meet management objectives such as timber production and regeneration.
